Portuguese cellist Mafalda Santos started her musical studies at the age of 3 with Alexandra Trindade (violin). At the age of 7, she started studying cello with Daniela Brito and Raquel Andrade. She then studied in Espinho with Raquel Andrade and Miguel Fernandes, having regular lessons with Romain Garioud, and in Lisbon with Nuno Abreu and Paulo Gaio Lima. In 2017 she started her studies with Amit Peled at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, which she attends on a full scholarship.
She is 1st prize winner of the main cello competitions in Portugal, both national and international: “Marília Rocha” (2008/2013/2014), “Paços Premium” (2009/2011/2013), “Prémio Conservatório de Lisboa” (2014), “Prémio Bomtempo” (2014), “Sta. Cecília International Competition” (2014), “2o Concurso Nacional de Interpretação Musical Cultivarte Jovem” (2016) and “17o Fundão International Competition”. Mafalda is also 1st prize winner of “IV Concurso de Violín e Violonchelo Cidade de Vigo” (2015, Spain), “London Grand Prize Virtuoso International Music Competition” (2016), having been invited to perform in the Elgar Room at Royal Albert Hall, and 2nd prize winner of “Rising Stars Grand Prix 2016 – International Music Competition Berlin”, and was subsequently invited to perform at the Chamber Music Hall, Berliner Philharmoniker. She is also prize winner of the 27th edition of “Prémio Jovens Músicos” competition, in 2013 (under 18) and 2nd prize winner of the 29th edition (under 26), in 2015. Additionally, she has been awarded the “Prémio Marília Rocha” prize in 2013 and 2014 among all instruments, for the best interpretation of a Portuguese piece.
Mafalda has attended several masterclasses in Portugal, Spain, Italy, France, Germany and Austria with Jens-Peter Maintz, Gary Hoffman, Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt, Amit Peled, Johannes Moser, Lluis Claret, Maria de Macedo, Paulo Gaio Lima, Elizabeth Wilson, Edoardo Sbaffi, Xavier Gagnepain, among others.
She has performed several times as a soloist with orchestras, under conductors Pedro Neves, Reinaldo Guerreiro, Cesário Costa and Francisco Pérez.
She has recently won the first prize in the Yale Gordon Competition for orchestral bowed strings (2018), and will now be performing recitals on the Shriver Hall ‘Discovery’ Series as well as the Music in the Great Hall series. Mafalda will also perform as a soloist with the Peabody Symphony Orchestra during the 2018-2019 season.
Mafalda performs on a 1790 William Forster cello donated to the Peabody Institute by Mrs. Janet S. Greive.
